Electricity is generated at power stations, travels hundreds of kilometers, and finally reaches your home safely at a usable voltage.
How does electrical energy travel so far without huge losses?
The answer lies in one of the most important devices in physics - the transformer.
A transformer is an electrical device that changes the voltage of alternating current (AC) without changing its frequency.
Electricity generated at power stations (~11 kV) must travel long distances. If transmitted directly, energy loss becomes very high.
So transformers increase voltage to 220 kV or more for efficient transmission.
| Parameter | Meaning | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage (V) | Electrical pressure | Can be increased |
| Current (I) | Flow of charge | Causes heat loss |
| Resistance (R) | Opposition in wires | Fixed |
| Power Loss | I²R | Must be minimized |
| Type | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Step-Up | Increases voltage | Power stations |
| Step-Down | Decreases voltage | Homes |
| Isolation | Safety | Medical devices |
| Stage | Voltage | Transformer Role |
|---|---|---|
| Power Plant | ~11 kV | Step-up |
| Transmission | 220–400 kV | Low loss transmission |
| Substation | 33 kV | Step-down |
| Home | 220 V | Final step-down |
| Electrical Concept | Water Analogy |
|---|---|
| Voltage | Water pressure |
| Current | Flow rate |
| Resistance | Pipe friction |
| Transformer | Pressure regulator |
| Feature | AC | DC |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic Field | Changing | Constant |
| Induction | Possible | Not possible |
| Transformer Works | Yes | No |
Transformers are highly efficient devices (95%–99%). Losses are minimal and mainly due to heat and magnetic effects.
| Wrong Idea | Correct Understanding |
|---|---|
| Creates energy | Transfers energy |
