Environment conservation project

Class 10 Biology Environment Conservation Case Study

Biology Intermediate Class 10

This case study explores how students participate in an environment conservation project through activities like tree plantation, waste management, and biodiversity awareness. It highlights real-life...

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of environmental conservation and biodiversity protection.
  • Identify the role of student eco-clubs and community participation in conservation.
  • Analyze how human activities affect ecosystems.
  • Explain practical methods of waste management and tree plantation.
  • Develop awareness about sustainable environmental practices.

Case Study:

A government secondary school in Rajasthan launched an environment conservation project as part of its science and eco-club activities. The project involved students planting trees, managing waste, and creating awareness about biodiversity in their community.

The initiative was guided by the National Green Corps (NGC), a Government of India programme that encourages environmental activities in schools through eco-clubs of 30-50 students. These eco-clubs participate in activities such as biodiversity conservation, water conservation, energy saving, and waste management.

During the project, the students planted 150 native tree saplings around the school campus during the annual Van Mahotsav celebration, a national tree-planting festival that promotes awareness about forests and environmental protection.

The students also conducted a survey of the school environment. They observed that plastic waste in the playground and nearby streets was harming soil quality and affecting small organisms such as insects and earthworms. Through group discussions, they learned that biodiversity- the variety of living organisms in an ecosystem- is essential for maintaining ecological balance and supporting life systems such as clean air, water, and fertile soil.

As part of the project, the students introduced three simple conservation practices:

  • Segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
  • Composting dry leaves and food waste to produce organic manure
  • Organizing awareness campaigns about reducing plastic use

After six months, the school recorded positive changes: improved greenery, increased bird activity, and reduced plastic waste on campus.

This project demonstrated that small, community-based conservation actions by students can significantly contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Questions

Section A – MCQs

1. The main objective of the environment conservation project in the school was to:

A. Increase the number of buildings
B. Protect and improve the local environment
C. Increase electricity production
D. Reduce classroom size

2. Which activity directly helps increase biodiversity in the school campus?

A. Burning waste materials
B. Tree plantation
C. Increasing plastic usage
D. Cutting grass regularly

3. Composting dry leaves and food waste mainly helps to:

A. Produce harmful gases
B. Increase plastic pollution
C. Produce organic manure for soil
D. Reduce oxygen in soil

4. Eco-clubs under the National Green Corps mainly aim to:

A. Promote environmental awareness among students
B. Produce electricity in schools
C. Increase industrial production
D. Replace science education

Section B - Short Answer Questions

1. Explain how tree plantation contributes to environmental conservation.

2. Why is waste segregation important in maintaining a healthy environment?

3. How can students play an important role in protecting biodiversity?

Section C - Long Answer Question

1. A school plans to start an eco-club project to reduce environmental pollution in its locality.

Analyze the situation and answer the following:

  • Identify two environmental problems that students may observe in their surroundings.
  • Suggest three practical conservation activities the eco-club could implement.
  • Explain how such projects help create environmental awareness in the community.

Answer Key

MCQ Answers

  1. B - Protect and improve the local environment
  2. B - Tree plantation
  3. C - Produce organic manure for soil
  4. A - Promote environmental awareness among students

Short Answer Solutions

1. Tree plantation increases green cover, improves air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide, provides habitats for animals and birds, and helps maintain ecological balance.

2. Waste segregation separates biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable materials. This allows organic waste to be composted and recyclable materials to be reused, reducing environmental            pollution.

3. Students can protect biodiversity by planting trees, reducing plastic use, conserving water, spreading environmental awareness, and participating in eco-club activities.

Long Answer Solution

Students may observe environmental problems such as plastic pollution, deforestation, or water wastage in their locality.

Possible conservation activities:

  1. Tree plantation drives in school and nearby areas.
  2. Waste segregation and recycling programs.
  3. Awareness campaigns on reducing plastic use and saving water.

These activities help students understand environmental issues practically. They also encourage community participation and create awareness about protecting natural resources and biodiversity
