Case Study:

In modern hospitals like All India Institute of Medical Sciences, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machines are widely used for diagnosing internal body conditions without surgery. MRI technology is based on the principles of strong magnetic fields and nuclear magnetism.

Inside an MRI machine, a very strong magnetic field (typically 1.5 to 3 Tesla) is generated using powerful superconducting magnets. When a patient enters this magnetic field, the hydrogen nuclei (protons) present in the body align themselves in the direction of the field.

A radiofrequency pulse is then applied, disturbing this alignment. When the pulse is turned off, the nuclei return to their original positions and release energy in the form of signals. These signals are detected and processed by a computer to create detailed images of organs and tissues.

The strength of the magnetic field plays a crucial role in image clarity. Stronger fields provide better resolution but also require strict safety measures. Metallic objects must be kept away, as they can be strongly attracted by the magnetic field, posing risks.

MRI is preferred over X-rays in many cases because it does not use harmful ionizing radiation. In India, MRI technology has improved healthcare by enabling early detection of diseases such as tumors and brain disorders.
