Case Study:
As the demand for electricity increases, countries are exploring different sources of energy that are efficient and environmentally friendly. One such source is nuclear energy, which is produced in nuclear power plants through a process called nuclear fission. In this process, atoms of elements such as uranium split and release a large amount of energy in the form of heat.
In India, nuclear power plants such as those in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat generate electricity for millions of homes. In a nuclear reactor, the heat produced from nuclear fission is used to convert water into steam. The steam rotates a turbine connected to a generator, producing electricity that is supplied to the national grid.
One of the major advantages of nuclear energy is its high energy density. A very small amount of nuclear fuel can produce a huge amount of energy. For example, 1 kg of uranium can produce thousands of times more energy than the same amount of coal, making nuclear power highly efficient.
Another advantage is that nuclear power plants produce very low greenhouse gas emissions during electricity generation. Unlike coal-based power plants, nuclear plants do not release carbon dioxide or air pollutants during operation, which helps reduce climate change and air pollution.
Nuclear energy is also a reliable and continuous source of electricity. Nuclear power plants can operate continuously for long periods and provide a stable supply of energy, unlike solar or wind power which depend on weather conditions.
Because of these advantages-high efficiency, low emissions, and reliability-many countries consider nuclear energy an important part of their long-term energy strategy.
