Why does a 100W bulb consume more electricity than a 40W bulb?

Power = energy consumed per second. A 100W bulb converts 100 joules/sec into light + heat, while a 40W bulb converts only 40 joules/sec. That’s why your electricity bill depends on wattage × hours used.
