When you press the accelerator in a car, what's actually happening in terms of physics?

By pressing the accelerator, you're increasing the rate of change of velocity — that's acceleration. The engine exerts a greater force, overcoming friction, pushing the car forward faster. Similarly, pressing brakes causes negative acceleration (deceleration).
