Why do we use noble gas notation in electron configurations?

Writing configurations for heavy elements is lengthy. Noble gas notation uses the previous noble gas as a shortcut, e.g., Fe = [Ar] 3d⁶ 4s² instead of writing all 26 electrons explicitly.
