Why does a cricket ball follow a curved path when hit into the air?

Once hit, the ball has two motions: horizontal (constant velocity) and vertical (accelerated due to gravity). The combination of these motions produces a parabolic path. That's why the ball rises, slows, and falls symmetrically.
